The Littlest Yankee

With baseball back in the news these past weeks and a well-written bio of slugger Mickey Mantle stirring nostalgia, maybe its time to dust off the Christian credentials of ace Yankee second baseman Bobby Richardson.

Bobby played so well for those powerhouse Yankee teams of the 1950s and 1960s that it garnered him six Golden Glove awards and recognition as Most Valuable Player in the storied Yankee/Pirates series of 1960.

Yet what really sets Bobby Richardson grinning is the knowledge that one of his closest friends on those Yankee clubs gave his life to Christ before the end. Richardson courageously tried to witness to "the Mick" and other Yankees during a time when Christians and professional sport didn't seem a good match. His patience paid off.

"To God be the glory," Richardson prayed at Mickey's funeral.
